SURS Retirement Estimator

Submitted By Anita Roewer   Begin Date: 4/2/2014
Email: anroewer@mchenry.edu Phone: x8737

Are you eligible to retire and contemplating retirement soon?

PA98-599 calls for a change in the effective rate of interest and actuarial factors used in SURS Money Purchase calculation.  As a result, you may experience a decrease in the benefit provided under SURS Money Purchase calculation if retiring on or after 7/1/14. SURS has completed programming of their Interim Benefit Estimator that will calculate estimates for any future date through 7/1/14.  It will allow you to compare your estimated monthly benefit before and after the Money Purchase changes go into effect on 7/1/14.

For a quick comparison, first calculate an estimate with a retirement date prior to 7/1/14, such as 6/30/14. Then, calculate an estimate with a retirement date of 7/1/14. Compare the results.  If your estimated calculation for a date prior to 7/1/14 indicates that you are highest under SURS General Formula, you will not be impacted by the Money Purchase changes.

To use the estimator, log onto the SURS website using the member login button, click Benefit Estimator and follow the instructions.

More information is attached, direct from the SURS website.

April is Autism Awareness Month

Submitted By Bev Albright   Begin Date: 4/8/2014
Email: balbright@mchenry.edu Phone: 8676

More ASD facts:

  • Almost half of the children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder are estimated to have average or above average intellectual ability (IQ greater than 85).
  • Statistics vary in terms of race.  Almost 1 in 63 white children were identified on the autism spectrum, 1 in 81 black children, and 1 in 93 Hispanic children.

We would like to share 2 very informative videos with you over the next few weeks. The first, Autism “Awareness” – Ten Things You Should Know, was produced by a young man just 3 months after his autism diagnosis.  He addresses what it’s like to be on the autism spectrum and how to interact with someone on the spectrum.  There is a lot of great information pact into this 5 minute video.

Be Heard! PACE Survey

Email: ahumke@mchenry.edu Phone: 815-479-7518

Be Heard! Personal Assessment of the College Environment (PACE) Survey

PACE survey data collection has begun! The survey will be open through April 30, so please let your voice be heard. Your feedback will help determine future improvement at McHenry County College (MCC).

The survey is administered through a third-party provider, the National Initiative for Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness (NILIE). Your answers are completely confidential and will be released only as summaries in which no individual’s answers can be identified. Specifically, this means that responses will be presented in the aggregate, and any response group with less than a 10% representation of the entire population will either be combined with another group or removed from our report. Within these specifications, MCC has requested that the only demographic analysis contained in the report will be personnel classification, employment status, campus location, and years worked at the College.

Weekly reminders will be sent by NILIE to those who haven’t yet completed the survey. Thank you in advance for assisting us with our research—do not miss this opportunity to impact change at MCC!

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

If you are in Colleague and want to pull up the last person or course section that you were in.

Use the at symbol - '@' and the most recent record you were in will come up.  You can enter '@' in the person search (in the upper left hand corner) or in the LookUp dialogue box that appears when you enter a Form.

Colleague is fun.

Free Opera Tickets

Submitted By Paula Lauer   Begin Date: 4/12/2014
Email: plauer@mchenry.edu Phone: 8582

I have some comp tickets to the live streaming broadcast of the New York Metropolitan Opera. These broadcasts are shown at the Crystal Lake movie theater on Rt. 14. If you would like a couple tickets to experience the opera (sort of) live, let me know; it’s pretty cool. I went to the Encore (rebroadcast) performances of La Boheme this past week, and it was really fun. I highly recommend it as a great way to try opera, and if you’re already a fan, you’ll enjoy the close-ups, behind-the-scenes peeks, and interviews with the singers between scenes.

There are live streams on Saturdays and then Encore showings, where  they’re rebroadcasting the same performance again, on Wednesday evening. Here are the dates and performances:

Cosi fan tutte, Sat. 4/26, 11:55 a.m.

Encore Wed. 4/30, 6:30 p.m.

La Cenerentola, Sat. 5/10, 11:55 a.m. (this appears to be the story of Cinderella :) )

Encore Wed. 5/14, 6:30 p.m.

Details here: http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/liveinhd/LiveinHD.aspx

Right now we have 4 tickets for each live show and 2 for each Encore. Special thanks to WNIJ, our NPR station, for making these tickets available.

Howard's Heroes 2014

Email: balbright@mchenry.edu Phone: 8676

In memory of our good friend and former Director, Howard Foreman, we asked our students to nominate members of MCC’s faculty, staff, and administration as recipients of a very special honor.  For the first time ever, members of the Special Needs staff were eligible. We would like to recognize a record 44 wonderfully dedicated people as “HOWARD’S HEROES” for 2014.

This honor has become a tradition.  We frame the list each year and prominently display the names of those who have meant so much to our students.  Thanks to all of you who help make an education at MCC accessible to students with disabilities.  Your patience, understanding, and creativity have meant so much to so many students.  Howard would be proud!

Peace Soup: Suspended Soup at Jersey Mike's

Submitted By Mark Waters   Begin Date: 4/2/2014
Email: mwaters@mchenry.edu Phone: x8946

Throughout April, as part of a Comp 2 student service project, Jersey Mike’s Subs will be participating in the Suspended Food movement. When you visit the Crystal Lake or Lake in the Hills Jersey Mike’s stores, you can purchase a cup of soup to “suspend.” What that means is you can buy a cup of soup that will help someone in need.  At the end of April, Jersey Mike’s will be providing your suspended soups for the homeless through Pioneer Center.  (They will also be ladling out all your grooviness.)

Peace to all our MCC soup sisters and brothers.  (And Bono says, hi.)

Many Thanks to those of you who offered up prayers of good wishes, calls and cards during my recovery while off work this past month.  I fell on the ice on our driveway and fractured my left shoulder and chipped my large tuberosity bone.  I am back to work this week and am healing well after lots of in-home therapy.  Now will begin physical therapy for arm strengthening beginning this week for 4-6 weeks.

Thanks again, to my MCC family for your support and well wishes.
